SAN DIEGO ZOO: Africa rocks

When your client gives you free reign to lean in to the name of its newest exhibit, you can really have some fun. Africa Rocks was the San Diego Zoo’s most ambitious undertaking and its largest expansion to date. The exhibit, which features not just one but six different African habitats, became the inspiration for a super-fun rock-and-roll themed campaign. Starting with these teaser posters, made with the help of American poster artist SCROJO, we created a campaign that put each habitat - and its animal superstars - front and center.

Inspired by the animated MTV bumpers that used to play in between music videos, we brought a different visual style to each of Africa Rocks’ six different habitats. For someone (like me) who grew up on MTV, getting a chance to re-create that genre, with the help of the talented animation team at Gentlemen Scholar, was incredibly inspirational and a lot of fun.

We were also lucky enough to collaborate with Stranger Things artist Kyle Lambert to create the campaign’s out-of-home key art.
